Alexander taking Tyre was the final point in his taking of Syria. With Tyre fallen and in command of Alexander, he possessed control of the Mediterranean Sea down to Egypt, which would fall to him soon enough. In terms of military strategy, by taking Tyre, no matter how bloody or costly, Alexander was able to create a channel for him to receive reinforcements from the Greek mainland, though he still needed to take Egypt so that his path from Greece would be unabated.
